Helpful Tips to Combat Allergy SeasonPosted 05/03/2016 at 03:52 PMThere are a literally millions of allergy sufferers in the United States, whether it be seasonal or year-round. Symptoms range from sinus headaches to congestion, from running noses to sneezing and itchy watery eyes.

Thanks to this past winters' mild conditions filled with warmer temperatures and moisture, not-to-mention an early spring, this allergy season is off to a strong start.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)'s annual "Spring Allergy Capitals" noted cities with higher than average pollen counts. The following are the top 20 cities:

1. Jackson, MS8. Providence, RI15. Baton Rouge, LA2. Memphis, TN9. Knoxville, TN16. Tulsa, OK3. Syracuse, NY10. Buffalo, NY17. New Orleans, LA4. Louisville, KY11. Dayton, OH18. Toledo, OH5. McAllen, TX12. Little Rock, AR19. Winston-Salem, NC6. Wichita, KS13. Columbia, SC20. Springfield, MA7. Oklahoma City, OK13. Columbia, SC

Here's the good news, there are steps you can take to help minimizes the effects of seasonal allergies.

REDUCE YOUR EXPOSURE TO YOUR TRIGGERS.

Simple... right? Well, easier said than done.

  • Avoid your time outside on those dry, windy days. I know you like hanging your clothes out to dry, but not a good idea. The pollen is captured in the woven material and is brought it inside by default.
  • Avoid mowing and gardening. If you have no choice, a pollen mask should help. Be sure to change clothes and shower to minimize exposure.
  • Keep the windows closed. If you are like me, on pretty day you are inclined to open the windows and let the fresh air in - Not a good idea. Use your air conditioner or central air system.

KEEP YOUR INDOOR ENVIRONMENT AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE.

This will take some effort on your part.

  • Clean/change the filters. Your air conditioner or duct filters need attention. Keeping them clean will help decrease the pollen and increase the performance in your air conditioner or forced air system.
  • Use a dehumidifier. This will to keep the air dry.
  • Vacuum and dust more frequently. Routine use a sweeper with a HEPA filter, and dusting with cleaning cloth that actually captures the dust, not one that just spreads it around, will truly help.
  • Use an Air Purifier in the bedroom and main living area. Increase the quality of the air you breathe. We recommend the 7-stage Rocky Mountain Summit or Summit PLUS Air Purifier which combats allergen triggers from multiple angles for a comprehensive clean. The two (2) most important stages to a pollen sufferer is the hospital-grade HEPA filter captures pollen, dust, dander, air down to .03 microns, and the Anion feature which uses ions to render particulates heavy, dropping them to the ground and out of the air you breathe. Choosing to run the other stages such as the Photo-catalytic filtration, Germicidal UV Lamps and ozone feature will address viruses, bacteria, etc. for a healthier environment.
