The ORGINS of CHRISTMAS in JulyPosted 07/17/2017 at 08:49 AM I was shocked when a friend told me he was not familiar with "Christmas in July." Left with the thought that this was an "East Coast" phenomenon, I decided to do some research and this is what I discovered.
The honor of coining the phrase "Christmas in July" goes to a girl's summer camp in North Carolina. In 1933, the Keystone Camp celebrated Christmas??complete with tree, gifts, and a visit from the famous jolly o' elf himself, Santa Claus.
In 1940, the phrase became the title of a Hollywood movie. Although it was not a movie about Christmas, the comedy's premise was about a guy who gave presents to his family & friends after being told he had won a large sum of money.
Beginning in 1942, the Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. celebrated Christmas in July with carols and the sermon "Christmas Presents in July." The pastor explained that the special service was in July to provide enough time for missions throughout the world to receive the generous gifts.
In 1944 and 1945, even the U.S. Post Office, Army, and Navy promoted in July the necessity for mailing Christmas items to the men and women serving overseas during WWII.
The commercialization began in the 1950's with Christmas in July themes to boost summertime sales and reduce inventory to make room for fall merchandise.
Today, even TV networks broadcast Christmas movies and restaurants/bars decorate with Christmas themes in July.
Christmas is actually during Australia's hot and humid summer, so snuggling around a fire with hot chocolate... not going to happen. So the popularity of celebrating Christmas in July when it's their winter makes perfect sense to enjoy a traditional cold-weather Christmas.
